Our main attraction here at Lodge Kiyokawa will be the nature. What better to exemplify an outdoor experience but by using that nature which surrounds us.
Our sauna is a tent sauna that was made in the sauna capitol of the world, Finland. Using the emerald green river in front as a cold bath, we give you a natural experience like no other.
For a prefecture like Oita having the most abundant amount of hot springs in the world, it is a surprise to see that Bungo Ono does not have any. The history of saunas in Bungo Ono date back to around 500 years ago when our ancestors would use steam rock baths that were carved in the sides of cliffs to relax. From this, we want to honor that history and make an abundant sauna culture in this city.

A 15-minute drive or a 1-hour bike ride, seeing one of Bungo Onos most popular tourism spots is very easy. This waterfall is uniquely located in the middle of Ogata Village, making it the former life source of this beautiful are. With a view that is compared to the likes of Niagara Falls, this part of scenic Bungo Ono will surely leave you breathless.
‘Local’ is a big thing we preach here at Lodge Kiyokawa. Roadside station Kiyokawa offers all the local products that Kiyokawa Village has to offer. With 5 different Roadside Stations in all of Bungo Ono, the flavor of each village is something you can see and taste in each and every one.
A little less well known that Harajiri Waterfalls, this quiet isolated waterfall is sure to serenade you with its tranquility. Located in a small pocket near the Lodge, the surrounding nature and waterfalls collaboration gives you a sense of natural wonder.
Located in the mountains, the entrance of this shrine takes you on a miniature hike up Ondake Mountain. The shrine is an old relic of Bungo Ono’s past but to this day is said to protect the energy of the mountain.
Behind the shrine, there is a path which takes only 5 minutes to walk and climb to reach the peak of this mountain. If anyone is interested in an amazing aerial view of Bungo Ono, this is recommended.
The longest underwater caves in all of Japan with a span of 1 km long, it is great for any season during the year! There are many different options for activities at Inazumi like underwater cave diving, art galleries, and the new cave sauna starting in the spring of 2021.
“Soul Taking” is the word that one of our staff members describes this place. Magaibutsu in English describes ‘a stone buddha carved into the face of a cliff’ which is exactly what Fukoji is. Measuring in at 12m tall, it is Japans largest Magaibutsu. Surrounding it is two caves and a place of worship in one of these caves which date back to 800 years ago. It is a must see for anyone looking to find their inner Zen in Japan.
There are a lot of Japans biggest and Japans longest in Bungo Ono but this one is the last and might be the most impressive. First of all, Bungo Ono has the most stone bridges in all of Japan, 121 to be exact. This particular bridge has the largest arch out of all of the stone bridges in Japan. Surrounded by a river and large towering cliffs, it feels like a place that Studio Ghibli may have taken inspiration from.
Approximately 500 maples are planted around Tanji Pond and Shinji Pond, and it is a famous spot for autumn leaves that represents Oita Prefecture. The best time to see it is from mid-November to the end of November, when the Yujaku Tourism Maple Festival is held.
Lodge Kiyokawa boasts two different breweries of Bungo Onos finest Sake and Shochu. Using delicious and fresh ingredients surrounding the breweries, it takes your taste buds and night life to another level. If you want a souvenir to bring home, they will ship it to your home address as well!
