Clean Peach Harvest
What’s the iconic specialty of Kiyokawa village of Bungo Ono you ask?
It would be … (drum roll please) “Clean Peach!”
Often called the rare “Legendary Peach,” our Clean Peach is renowned for its refreshing juiciness and delightfully sweetness. Cultivated as a premium brand for nearly 40 years, it has won hearts all across the country.
While regular peaches have a sugar content of around 11 degrees, Clean Peaches naturally exceed that by about 2 degrees. The finest ones reach an impressive 16–17 degrees, and—though extremely rare—some have even been recorded at over 20 degrees. A truly exceptional peach indeed!
Crowds gather in search of the rare Clean Peach
When peach season begins, long lines will form at our local farmer’s market – Roadside Station Kiyokawa!
No wonder! After all, it is a Legendary Peach. Clean Peaches are uniquely grown through a special technique called “dwarfing cultivation,” where peach trees are grafted onto beads of the flowering apricot tree, producing smaller trees that yield exceptionally sweet peaches. This style of cultivation is a much more challenging method than the typical peach growing, making it quite rare and a difficult-to-master process.

It is exactly because of this unique and labor-intensive cultivation method, exclusively practiced in Kiyokawa village, that our peaches become so incredibly delicious!
On the other hand, the aging of peach farmers has become a significant issue. While there were 100 peach farming households when cultivation began, only about 13 remain today, putting the future of Clean Peach at risk. That is why here at Roadside Station, a Peach School Project has been launched to nurture the next generation of peach farmers.
The symbolic kagura monument at Roadside Station Kiyokawa
As a part of these initiatives, we started the Clean Peach Harvest experience at Roadside Station last year.
It is held at “Yume Farm Oita”, operated directly by Roadside Station Kiyokawa. The presenter is Toshiali Miura, the stationmaster!
Our stationmaster is a true peach aficionado, with nearly 40 years of experience in all things peach. Feel free to ask him anything! For more details about his background, please check his profile below.
